Native Scarborough – A New Health Deli on the Block

You know how it is, January rolls around and so do all of your good intentions to eat healthily, exercise more, maybe even do dry-January or Veganuary. It’s all great, until you try to find somewhere healthy to eat away from home, and everywhere you go is cake, cake and more cake.

Saturday morning, after doing Yoga on my Deliciously Ella app (yep, I’m all over the January thing), I had a quick look on Instagram and saw that Native, a fairly new addition to the Scarborough coffee house scene, were child friendly with children’s menu and a basket of toys in the corner for their smaller customers to enjoy. Having an almost 2 year old, things like that will always entice me in. It was already late in the morning since, little Miss and I had enjoyed a lazy morning of watching cartoons in bed, but I sent a message asking if Native did brunch. They promptly replied with all of the options, which is great because most places take ages to respond on social media.

A little later, after returning my books to the library, I was there, sitting in a pleasant window seat in the spacious and modern cafe. It was fairly busy as people are obviously starting to know it’s there. In terms of decor, it’s modern but has a welcoming Scandinavian feel. It’s spacious, with warm wooden floors and plenty of room to manoeuvre a pushchair around, or to feel like you have plenty of space between you and the next diner. I love the fact that they have left so much space rather than cramming each nook with too many tables. There’s a children’s menu with a nice selection of soups, toast, porridge etc and that basket of toys that my little lady didn’t hesitate to dig in to.

The menu itself offers a lovely selection of coffees, and smoothies as well as breakfast options such as porridge (which I had), avocado on toast and granola as well as lunch options such as bagels or super healthy grain bowls. I really want to go back and have a super healthy grain bowl, the lady at the next table had one and it looked divine. They also offer a good selection of vegan options for many of the items on the menu.

The people who own the deli are so friendly and accommodating, they give a real welcoming feel and I must say, as I ate my beautifully prepared cinnamon and honey porridge and sipped a delightful cup of super strong coffee, I did think to myself that I will definitely be paying this place a return visit.
